UNREALMU PLAYER PORTAL

Play MU Online in Your Browser

No installer, no patcher, no hunting for the right client version. Open a tab, sign in, and walk into Lorencia the way you did twenty years ago.

You can play MU Online in your browser on UnrealMu, with no download and no installation. The Season 6 Episode 3 game runs inside a normal tab on Windows, macOS or Linux, and your account, characters and progress follow you wherever you sign in. If you remember the evenings of patching clients and matching versions, this will feel almost suspiciously easy.

UnrealMu is an unofficial, fan-run server and is not affiliated with Webzen. It exists for the pleasure of walking through the old maps again, and the browser version is simply the shortest road back to them.

How the MU Online web client works

This is not a simplified imitation of the game, and it is not video streamed from a faraway machine. It is the real client, the open source MuMain client that the OpenMU project recommends, compiled to run inside the browser using a technology called WebAssembly. Think of WebAssembly as a way for a browser to run proper compiled programs at close to native speed, inside a safe sandbox.

The graphics are drawn through WebGL 2, the same standard browsers use for 3D, and the game talks to the server just as the desktop client would. What you see on screen is rendered on your own computer, so the speed depends on your machine rather than on our bandwidth.

The first time you press Play, your browser has to fetch the game data: models, maps, textures and sounds. Once that is done, it is cached, so every visit after the first one starts far more quickly. Nothing is installed on your computer in the traditional sense, and closing the tab closes the game.

Play in five steps

  1. Register an account. Go to the registration page and create your login. It is free, and one account works across all three realms.
  2. Press Play. Use the Play button on the website. The client begins to load; on your first visit this is the longest wait.
  3. Pick a realm. Choose Hard 5x, Classic 100x or Fast 1000x. Not sure which? The realms and resets guide explains the differences.
  4. Sign in and choose your character. Enter the account name and password you registered, then select an existing character or create a new one.
  5. Press Connect. You will arrive in the world, and from there it is the game you remember.

If it is your first time back after many years, the classes guide and the maps and hunting spots guide will help you pick up where memory leaves off.

What you need

  • A desktop or laptop computer. Phones and tablets are not supported yet.
  • A modern desktop browser with WebGL 2 support.
  • Hardware acceleration switched on in the browser settings. Without it, 3D can be slow or may not appear at all.
  • A few hundred MB of free space for the first load. The game data is roughly 190 MB compressed and about 520 MB unpacked, and the browser keeps it cached afterwards.
  • A reasonably steady connection for that first download. After it is cached, the connection only needs to carry normal game traffic.

You do not need a powerful graphics card. MU was made for the hardware of 2004, and a laptop from the last several years will usually be more than enough, provided the browser is allowed to use the GPU.

A note on sound

Browsers do not allow a page to start playing audio on its own, which is a sensible rule that happens to be unkind to nostalgia. If the Lorencia theme is silent when you arrive, click once anywhere in the game window. That click unlocks sound, and the music will come in. After that, it behaves like any other game.

Troubleshooting

Black screen

Reload the page and try again. If it keeps happening, check that hardware acceleration is enabled in your browser, close other heavy tabs, and restart the browser. A black screen is usually a loading or graphics hiccup, not a problem with your account.

"Account already connected"

This appears when the server still thinks your previous session is alive, typically right after you closed a tab or the page crashed. Wait about a minute, then connect again. The server needs a moment to release the old session.

The first load is slow

That is expected. You are fetching a few hundred MB of game data once. Leave the tab open and let it finish rather than refreshing midway. Later visits use the cached copy and should be much quicker.

Choppy performance

Make sure hardware acceleration is on, close tabs you do not need, and check that your laptop is not in a battery saver mode that throttles the graphics chip.

Cached data disappeared

If you clear your browser's site data, the cached game files go with it, and the next visit will be a full first load again. Your account and characters are stored on the server, so nothing about your progress is lost.

Honest limits

We would rather tell you what is not finished than let you find out. The browser version has been tested in Chrome. Other modern desktop browsers may well work, but we have not tested them yet, so if you use something else and it misbehaves, try Chrome first. Phones and tablets are not supported yet, because the game was built for a keyboard and mouse and a touch interface is a separate piece of work.

We also keep the world lively with built-in bot players, which are clearly separated from real players in the rankings. You will rarely wander an empty Lorencia, but you should know who is who.

If you would like to know how this fits with other platforms, see playing on Windows, Linux and Mac. And if you are here for the feeling rather than the technology, remember Lorencia is a good place to begin.

Your first minutes inside

New characters start in Lorencia, and the Elf Soldier NPC there offers a 60-minute beginner buff of about +90 damage and +100 defence at low level, scaling with your level. It is available up to level 220 and is lost if you die. You will find Elf Soldiers at (96,129), (174,129), (130,128) and (132,165). Take the buff, head for the spiders at (180,128) or (88,127), and let muscle memory do the rest.

Resets, character services and the realms themselves are all free, and there is no cash shop. If you want to know how the long game works, the realms and resets guide covers it.

Playing alongside friends

Because the browser client is the same game as any other, parties, guilds, trade and chat all work in the usual way. A friend on a Windows desktop and another on a Linux laptop can stand in the same square of Lorencia, each in their own tab. The community forum, linked from the site, is a good place to arrange who is playing which realm and when.

Why a browser makes sense

For many returning players the hardest part of coming back was never the game. It was the logistics: finding a clean client, matching the right patch, dealing with a modern operating system that no longer wants to run old executables. A browser removes nearly all of that. You can try UnrealMu on your lunch break on whatever computer is in front of you, and if it is not for you, closing the tab leaves nothing behind.

The same account works if you later decide to try another realm, so there is little to lose by looking around. Register, press Play, and see whether the hills outside Lorencia still look the way you remember them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really play MU Online in a browser with no download?

Yes. UnrealMu runs the real Season 6 Episode 3 client inside your browser tab using WebAssembly, so there is no installer to run. The game data is fetched the first time you press Play and cached afterwards.

How much data does the first load need?

A few hundred MB. The game data is roughly 190 MB compressed and about 520 MB once unpacked. After that first load your browser keeps it cached, so later visits start much faster.

Which browsers work?

A desktop browser with WebGL 2 and hardware acceleration enabled. We have tested it in Chrome. Other modern desktop browsers may work but are not yet tested.

Can I play on my phone or tablet?

Not yet. Phones and tablets are not supported at the moment, so use a desktop or laptop computer.

I see a black screen. What should I do?

Reload the page and try again, and check that hardware acceleration is turned on in your browser settings. A black screen is most often a graphics or loading hiccup that clears on the second attempt.

Why does it say my account is already connected?

The server may still be holding your previous session after you closed a tab. Wait about a minute and try connecting again.
